Leadership w/ Queens & Kings

Leadership w/ Queens & Kings

The queens and kings of the Tarot are the masters of their suit and element. They have journeyed through the ups and downs of earth, air, fire, and water, and they know how to embody these energies with skill, intention, and responsibility.

In this workshop, we’ll explore each of the queens and kings, acknowledging their strengths and shadows and taking lessons from their varying leadership styles — while also envisioning our own capacity for leadership.

Most of the messages we receive around “leadership” are presented through the lens of capitalism and “success.” But simply being in a position of power in no way guarantees strong, responsible leadership.

We’ll investigate how we want to lead ourselves (self-leadership!), as well as how we want to show up in our families and communities as role models for the causes and values we care about most.

I’ll also guide you through a Tarot spread that will help you identify your queen-and-king combo of leadership at this time in your life, and how you can support yourself in the development and demonstration of these qualities through action, speech, creative work, and self-tending.

Those who register for this workshop will receive:

  • The Zoom link to attend the live class on Thursday, February 22, at 6:30pm CT.

  • A recording of the workshop.

Registration Pricing:

  • Free for Typewriter Tarot members, who will also receive the recording. (Members will receive the Zoom link via Patreon, where you also have access to our entire library of workshop recordings.) Learn more about membership or join here.

  • $33 for nonmembers.

Drawing as Creative Play

Drawing as Creative Play

Explore the practice of drawing as a way to heighten creativity, play with ideas and concepts, creatively solve problems, and have fun! Led by Austin artist and illustrator, Amitai (Ami) Plasse, you'll discover multiple approaches for drawing to enhance your creative practice, regardless of “skill-level” or previous training (none required!!!).

Your guide, Ami, has been working as an artist and illustrator for decades, and began honing his skills in his native New York City, sketching fellow commuters on the subway. Ami now brings his live-drawing skills to Austin’s music venues, creative gatherings, conferences, and corporate events, capturing the energy and characters that animate the scenes of life.

Ami is founder of Gonzo Viz, a live-drawing and animation studio. He’s a big proponent of art as a community practice, and he leads workshops to help more people embrace art-making as a way of experiencing the world, honoring their visions, and connecting with creativity.

In Drawing as Creative Play, Ami will offer different approaches, exercises, and practices you can use to cultivate a low-stakes, high-enjoyment drawing practice that enhances creativity overall and helps you relate to the world in meaningful ways. We’ll practice various techniques and approaches together during the workshop, so bring paper or a sketch book and drawing utensils, as you like (nothing fancy required!).

Those who register for this workshop will receive:

  • The Zoom link to attend the live class on Thursday, September 28, at 6:30pm CT.

  • A recording of the workshop.

Price: $33. Typewriter Tarot members can attend this workshop at no cost as part of their membership. If you’re currently a member, you’ll receive the Zoom link for this workshop via Patreon. The Major Arcana for Creativity

The Major Arcana of the Tarot help us explore the pivotal moments and movements of our lives. Many Tarot practitioners and teachers say, and I believe, that the Major Arcana reflect the story of the soul’s evolution, not only our lived experience in this lifetime.

Through exploring and understanding the Major Arcana, we can begin to see how life’s experiences and circumstances shape deeper shifts and lessons that we take through the rest of our days, and perhaps future lifetimes too!

In this workshop, we’ll explore each card in the Major Arcana, identifying the questions and invitations each card brings forward — while also engaging with each card as a portal for enhancing or understanding our creativity, our creative work, and our creative process.

This workshop is intended for those who are either new to Tarot or have some familiarity with the cards and are ready to deepen their relationship to the archetypes and the practice, perhaps with the intention of reading for others.

This is a longer (three hour) class, as we’ll be exploring 22 cards. We’ll take a 20-minute break in the middle to help us move through the experience at a digestible pace.

Those who register for this workshop will receive:

  • The Zoom link to attend the live class on Sunday, July 16, at 11:00am CT.

  • A recording of the workshop.

  • The class presentation containing card meanings, keywords, and key questions.

To enjoy our workshop on the Cups, click here.
To enjoy our workshop on the Wands, click here.

Participants who complete all of our Tarot workshops on the suits and Major Arcana will receive a 90-minute coaching session to explore your Tarot practice, including where you feel challenged, where you’d like your practice to go and grow, and next steps to support you. Those who pay to register for all workshops or recordings will receive a direct payment of $50 at the end of this journey.

PRICING

Typewriter Tarot members can attend this workshop at no additional cost. For members, the Zoom information will be shared via Patreon and you do not need to register. The workshop recording will be shared afterwards, also through Patreon.

For those who are not members, we ask for an exchange of $44, $33, or $22 to support the time, labor, expertise, and practice that informs the teachings we will share through this experience.

The Pentacles: A Journey Through The Material World
Feb

6:30 PM18:30

The Pentacles: A Journey Through The Material World

The Pentacles of the Tarot teach us about our relationship to the material world — our bodies, nature, and all the abundance that nature provides. This suit is most commonly associated with money and finances, and it does have something to say about “material success.” But the Pentacles have more to do with how we RELATE to the material world, versus how much material we actually have.

The Pentacles are most closely associated with the root chakra — the energy center most focused on survival and belonging. Through this lens, the Pentacles offer a path toward groundedness, steadiness and security, and how we manifest ideas in the physical world (and reap the fruits of their craetion, whether financial or otherwise).

Definitely the most dense and heavy of suit in the Tarot, the Pentacles help us notice and shift how we build, work, create, manifest, and resources ourselves.

In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll become more familiar with the meanings associated with individual cards, and you’ll begin developing and expanding your own personal interpretations. You’ll also deepen your understanding of the overarching story of the suit.

This workshop is intended for those who are either new to Tarot or have some familiarity with the cards and are ready to deepen their relationship to the archetypes and the practice, perhaps with the intention of reading for others.

Those who register for this workshop will receive:

  • The Zoom link to attend the live class on Thursday, February 9 at 6:30pm CT.

  • A recording of the workshop.

  • The class presentation containing card meanings, keywords, and key questions.

  • A workbook with journaling prompts for each of the cards in the suit, to help you connect personally with the archetypes and form interpretations unique and relatable to you!

  • A meditation to connect with the story of the entire suit.

Expect future workshops focusing on the Major Arcana cards. To enjoy our workshop on the Swords, click here.

Those who pay to register for all workshops or recordings will receive a direct payment of $50 at the end of this journey (this does not include Typewriter Tarot members who receive the class for free).

Book Coven: Fruiting Bodies

A Conversation with Kathryn Harlan
Thursday, December 8 | 6:30-8pm CT on Zoom

Book Coven — our celebration of witchy books and writers — welcomes Kathryn Harlan, author of the short story collection, Fruiting Bodies (2022, W.W. Norton).

Named one of Vulture’s best books of the year, this genre-bending debut collection constructs eight eerie worlds filled with desire, wisdom, and magic blooming amidst decay. Ranging from fantastical to gothic to uncanny, Fruiting Bodies follows characters — mostly queer and mostly women — on the precipice of change. Echoes of timeless myth and folklore reverberate through these narratives of discovery, appetite, and coming-of-age in the time of climate crisis.

Join us for a magical conversation with the Creatrix of this collection, Kathryn Harlan. We’ll explore her writing process and path to publication, as well as themes and questions echoing throughout her debut work. We’ll also discuss how writing is magic, and how magic can inform a writer’s journey. We’ll also pull Tarot cards as we go, and welcome audience questions.

Book Coven is open to all witches everywhere at no cost. Register below to receive the Zoom link the morning of the event.

To purchase a copy of Fruiting Bodies, visit (online) Austin’s Black-owned bookshop Black Pearl Books, or head to Bookshop.org, which supports independent bookstores nationwide. The book is also available on Amazon.

Writing the Hard Parts
Nov

6:30 PM18:30

Writing the Hard Parts

This is a magical invitation for writers whose projects include the crafting — and avoidance of — emotionally challenging scenes that might include: traumatic memories; the loss of loved ones or important relationships; times in life when we’ve felt lost, hopeless, or endangered; truths that people in your life don’t want known; and even writing death scenes for beloved characters.

We’ll talk about why “writing the hard parts” is so hard, what can happen for us when we go there (for better and worse), how to listen to and care for our bodies and nervous systems as we enter difficult material, and why it’s so important to move into this work with intention, resources, and support.

Most importantly, you’ll leave class with a ritual and process to help you prepare for the work, write the hard part, and create space for yourself to reflect, integrate, rest, and connect afterwards.

REGISTER for $25. All who register will also receive a class recording and a meditation to help you anchor into safety before beginning the writing process.

This class is free for Creative Coven and High Priestess members, who will receive the Zoom link via Patreon. Creative Spirit members can register for $11 using their discount code (shared via Patreon). Click here to learn about our membership community.

The Wands: A Journey Through Embodied Spirit

The Wands: A Journey Through Embodied Spirit

The Wands of the Tarot teach us about the workings of the human spirit and how that spirit animates our physical and material lives — in our bodies, our creativity and sensuality, our sense of adventure, and our willingness to fight for what we care about — including ourselves, others, and our greatest dreams.

The Wands are most closely associated with the solar plexus chakra, which fuels our ability to exert our willpower, chase after the things we desire, stand up for ourselves and those we love, and create and lead from a place of passion, excitement, and celebration.

Definitely the most fiery suit in the Tarot, the Wands help us notice and shift how we engage in conflict (or avoid it), how we express our passions, how we focus and expand, how we use the body to feed the soul the adventures it craves here on Earth. The insights and reflections offered by the Wands hold powerful guidance for shaping and forging the future we desire to create.

  • The Zoom link to attend the live class on Thursday, November 17 at 6:30pm CT.

Book Coven: Ceremonials

Book Coven: Ceremonials
Tuesday, October 4 | 6:30-8pm CT on Zoom

Book Coven — our celebration of witchy books and writers — returns for a reading romance with Ceremonials, the debut novella by Katharine Coldiron.

Inspired by Florence + the Machine’s 2011 album of the same name, Ceremonials is a short read (just 124 luscious pages!) — all swiftly swirling prose that wraps you in the story of Amelia and Corisande, two Catholic school girls enrapt in a friend-romance that ends tragically when Corisande drowns in a nearby lake.

But this is only the beginning.

Ceremonials explores how the bonds of friendship and love can bridge two realms, what it means to love a ghost (and a girl), to be loved in return… what it means to be saved and savior, and to choose one’s living self at all costs.

Interspersed throughout the pages of this haunting, vibrant tale are gorgeous full-color images by Mariana Magaña de Lio that resonate beautifully with the storyline — much like Tarot cards!

Read this gem in one enchanting evening, then join us for a conversation with the author! We’ll discuss the creation of this book, its origins, magic, themes, and questions. We’ll pull cards and talk to the characters (and maybe a couple ghosts, too!). Bring your questions for Katharine as well!

Tickets are free, and you can reserve your spot by simply emailing Typewriter Tarot. The Zoom link for Book Coven will be shared 24 hours before the event.

To get your copy of Ceremonials, purchase directly from Katharine by sending $15 via PayPal to kcoldiron@gmail.com. Katharine will include a personalized autograph, unless you’d rather she not (just let her know that!). If you must, you can order the book from Amazon.

Pleasure Magick

Pleasure Magick is the practice that connects soulful desire with pleasure, intention, and the energy of creation.

Join sex and intimacy coach Portia Brown and creative coach and mystic Cecily Sailer for a 3-part immersive workshop to guide you towards an accessible and expansive pleasure magick practice.

You’ll learn what pleasure magick is and how it works. You’ll develop and experience a pleasure practice that’s attuned to fully to YOU — unique and authentic to your experience of pleasure and what you desire to create next.

You’ll join a beautiful community of sexy, soulful people invested in lifting up pleasure and enacting powerful transformation. You’ll saunter away from this experience with a deeper connection to your body, your desire, your intuition, and your ability to transform dreams and visions into realities.

Join us for three powerful sessions, aligned with the moon cycle, to help you begin and deepen a life-long practice that honors your body, your pleasure, and your desire.

The Pleasure Magick journey is outlined below… And here’s a video of Portia and Cecily sharing why they created this experience, what they hope to share in the process, and how Pleasure Magick has made their lives richer, more free, and full of all the things they once used to pine for!

GATHERING 1: What is Pleasure Magick?

Tuesday, September 27 / 7-9pm CT
(New moon in Libra)

We’ll introduce you to the practice of pleasure magick — what is it? How does it work? How can you experience pleasure magick in a way that feels safe, exciting, and true to you? We’ll share our personal experiences with pleasure magick and how it’s enriched our lives beyond measure. Then we’ll guide you through a self-assessment to help you notice where you are now in relationship to your body, your pleasure, and your desire. Then we’ll guide you in crafting a beginner’s practice to call in whatever you desire to experience next, whether that’s abundance, personal freedom, creativity, or connection.

GATHERING 2: Collective Learning & Reflection

Tuesday, October 11 / 7-9pm CT
(Full moon in Aries)

We come together as a community to share experiences and insights after two weeks of personal pleasure magick practice. Cecily and Portia will answer questions and help the collective deepen our understanding of this practice and all the questions, challenges, and miracles we encounter along the way. We’ll also explore what it’s like to practice pleasure magick with a partner (or partners), and you’ll hear from one of our partners about their experience making magick as a couple (bring your beloved if you’d like them to learn with you).

GATHERING 3: Closing Ceremony

Tuesday, October 25 / 7-9pm CT
(New moon in Scorpio)

As we prepare to close our time together, we will co-create a collective pleasure ritual (100% PG!) to reinforce and amplify the intentions of the community. This will serve as our closing celebration, an opportunity to honor the work we’ve done individually and to combine our collective magic to manifest abundance, liberation, pleasure, and creativity. Participants will be invited to share final reflections, and Portia and Cecily will answer questions before we take our pleasure magick practice fully into our own hands.

In addition to our 3 sessions together, you’ll also receive:

  • Recordings of each gathering

  • A workbook to help you connect with your body, identify your desires, and record your magickal experiences and breakthroughs

  • A meditation and playlist to enhance your pleasure practice

  • The invitation to join our Slack community for the duration of our journey

  • Pillow Talk Office Hours between gatherings where you can receive support from Cecily or Portia around the magickal work you’re doing

  • The opportunity for a one-hour coaching session with Cecily or Portia

This experience is for you if you desire to…

  • Reconnect with your Sexual Self and invite more pleasure — sexual and otherwise! — into your life.

  • Learn what sex magic is all about and try it yourself.

  • Expand your set of magic and ritual practices to support your spiritual work and self-actualization.

  • Feel the support of a community container, with space for new discovery and insight.

Sober Witch

Join Typewriter Tarot founder Cecily Sailer as she celebrates 6 years of recovery from alcoholism. Cecily will share her story of addiction, struggle, and hopelessness, and her journey to restore connection to community, spirituality, and creativity.

This event is meant to honor a personal milestone, but also to honor the power of personal story as a source of inspiration and hope, and to help de-stigmatize the shame and secrecy around addiction and recovery.

Bring your questions (or share them anonymously here) and your own experiences with alcohol (good and bad). Because even if addiction is foreign to you personally, we all know someone who has struggled in a similar way. This is not meant to convert anyone to sobriety, but to provide a space where we can consider the nuances of our relationship to alcohol.

Octopus Hour is like an Artist’s Date (if you’re familiar with The Artist’s Way), but curated for you and available from home (because I know it’s hard to make time for the creative field trips you crave).

In this Octopus Hour, we’re visiting the Afro-futurism period room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where we’ll consider time-travel, cultural reclaiming, echoes of history, and comic books.

By the end, you’ll have a new piece of writing — made by you! — shimmering on your desk. Stick around after the hour to share new writing and celebrate with your fellow travelers!

Always free for Creative Coven members.
$11 for non-members.

All proceeds benefit The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in NYC.

Tarot for Your Novel

This four-part workshop is designed to help writers in various stages of the novel-writing process — whether you’ve been developing the concept and writing scattered scenes, or you’ve completed a full first (or 17th!) draft.

Over the course of four weeks, we’ll use Tarot to examine different aspects of the story — prevailing themes, characters, and setting — and help you understand your work more deeply and plan out next steps to move you to the next phase of your work.

Each session opens with a short craft talk, followed by guided Tarot work to bring new clarity and ideas to your work as an author. We’ll have time to discuss cards that come up, and workshop different challenges and possibilities you see for the shaping of your novel. Our final session allows us to debrief, process the journey, and determine where we’re headed next.

All sessions meet Wednesday evenings, except for the final session, which meets on Tuesday.

Session 1: Tarot for Your Novel’s THEMES / Wednesday, February 16 / 6:30-8:30pm CT on Zoom
Session 2: Tarot for Your Novel’s CHARACTERS / Wednesday, February 23 / 6:30-8:30pm CT on Zoom
Session 3: Tarot for Your Novel’s WORLD / Wednesday, March 2 / 6:30-8:30pm CT on Zoom
Session 4: Tarot for Your Novel — NOW WHAT? / *TUESDAY, March 8 / 6:30-8:30pm CT on Zoom

Tarot for Writers

Tuesday, January 18, 2022
6:30 PM 8:30 PM

In this two-hour workshop, we’ll explore how and why Tarot can become a powerful tool for writers. Tarot is a storytelling device, a collection of archetypes that describe the human experience, which is exactly the work writers set out to do. Tarot can help you work through creative blocks, generate content, find new direction for revision, and better understand your characters. You’ll practice different approaches for using Tarot to complement your work as a writer, regardless of how well you “know the cards.” Bring a Tarot deck, a journal, and let’s dive in.
